Student Health at Greenbriar East ES

Our health room hours are 9:05AM–4:05 PM.  The Public Health Nurse (PHN) assigned to Greenbriar East is Anna Wendland-Budzyn.  The School Health Aide (SHA) is Ashley Kim.There are certain situations when a student must go home, e.g., a temperature of 100 degrees or higher or has an undiagnosed rash. If a child has a fever, he/she should stay at home. It is recommended that a child be fever free without medication for at least 24-hours before returning to school. In the event a student becomes ill with a fever or is injured, the school will contact the parent(s) by telephone or email with the expectation that the student will be picked up as soon as possible. If parents are not reached, the emergency individuals listed at the bottom of the emergency care card will be called. Parents should keep emergency contact information up-to-date. If medication is needed at school, specific guidelines must be followed in accordance with FCPS Medication Administration Regulations. A doctor’s authorization form, which is kept on file in the Health Room, must be completed with both parent and student signatures. All medications will be dispensed by the Public Health Nurse/School Health Aide after the appropriate forms and doctor approvals are on file.

Health Information Form

The Health Information Form is to be completed by the parent or guardian at the start of each school year. The completed form is to be returned to the school clinic.

Prescription Medications

Children who need to take medication during school hours must have a signed Medication Authorization, Release, and Indemnification Form. Prescription medications require the signature of both the parent and the physician. Inhalers and EpiPens require authorization forms.

All medications must be in the original container and labeled with the student’s name, name of medication, dosage to be taken at school and frequency of dosage where applicable.

Over-the-counter Medications

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are drugs that can be purchased without a doctor's prescription and are used for the relief of symptoms on a temporary basis. With parent and physician authorization, OTC medications may be given on an "as needed" basis throughout the school year. Parents may authorize limited use for 10 consecutive days with a completed Medication Authorization FormExamples include antihistamines for allergic reactions. With parent permission using the Medication Authorization Form, certain OTC medications may be given on an "as needed" basis throughout the school year only as a pain reliever for headaches, muscle aches, menstrual cramps, or orthodontic pain. The medication must be supplied by the parent in its original container. Examples include Tylenol, Advil, Pamprin, and aspirin.

Transport of Medications to and from School

Parents must transport medications to and from school. All medications must be kept in the clinic and taken under adult supervision.

Scheduling Medical Appointments

Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside of school hours. When this is not possible, please send a note to the school on the morning of the appointment stating the time the child will be picked up. For safety reasons, parents must sign out children in the office.
